Heavy cast iron firebacks that make a charming pair. One panel features a Grecian or Roman man holding a grape leaf, while the other spotlights a woman in flowing garb and ribbons, blowing a trumpet. The back is marked “DESIGN COPYRIGHTED BY PEERLESS MFG. CO.” The company, founded in 1884 in Louisville, KY, was a manufacturer of cast iron fireplace fixtures, and, later, furnaces, water softening equipment and gas heaters.

Firebacks are traditionally used at the back of a fireplace to protect the masonry and radiate heat into the room. Firebacks were used primarily by royalty and the very wealthy when they were introduced in the late 15th century, and the middle class began utilizing them in the 17th and 18th centuries. Classical themes were common, as were scenes from nature and family life.
