Each Putto (singular) was placed over arched storefront windows, each facing a center piece. The Architects Eames and Young Putti’s are an interrupted revival from the Baroque period of art, which were revived from Renaissance art, but lets just say that they are a classical motif that dates back all the way to the 2nd century.
This pair of terracotta headers came from the Boatmen’s Bank Building in St. Louis, Missouri. The building was completed in 1914 by the architecture partnership of Eames and Young, one of the city’s most talented and influential early 20th century firms. The steel frame structure stood 19 stories tall. These and other terracotta pieces that adorned the building were produced by Winkle Terra Cotta Company. This St. Louis firm also supplied the terracotta for some of Louis Sullivan’s buildings.
