Ruth and Boaz tiles by Hamilton Tile Co. One features a woman's portrait and the other a man's portrait. Handcrafted furniture were not the only finely made pieces popular in Craftsman homes. Handcrafted tiles could be used near and around fireplaces. The process of creating ceramic tiles was similar to other ceramic artisan works, and any kind of ceramic product might come from the same manufacturer. Portrait tiles, that showed a cameo of a person, were also very popular during the Victorian period prior to the Arts and Crafts movement. After shaping the face in the form of a sculpted relief, glaze was poured around the face so that the raised portion would appear lighter, while the extra glaze would pool into the spaces and appear darker. These tiles could be used to give character to a simple room along a wall, placed in a kitchen or bathroom as a backsplash, or retrofitted into a table top to create a unique design.
