hand carved oliver house quartersawn oak banister

AA# 47720
Imagine the time and artistry necessary to create this 10 foot long hand carved banister. Made entirely of quartersawn oak and incredibly ornate, this piece is a one-of-a-kind masterpiece. Angels and winged lions are surrounded by incredible organic flourishes and egg & dart borders. One side is inscribed with the date, "1891," giving us an accurate date of completion. The banister is from the home of Henry Oliver, American industrialist and steel mogul, whose home was built in 1871. The banister was added during the remodel, which was completed in 1892. During his lifetime, Oliver was the largest individual property holder in downtown Pittsburgh.
