This light fixture is attributed to The Roycrofters, a society that had roots in the arts and crafts movement and was formed by Elbert Hubbard in 1895. Elbert Hubbard was a young entrepreneur Harvard drop out from Illinois. Hubbard founded The Roycroft Press, named after 17th century bookbinders Samuel and Thomas Roycroft, and the old term “royal craft”. The Press was later known simply as “The Roycrofters”, and was based in near Buffalo, New York. A quotation from art critic John Ruskin was the foundation for the Roycroft doctrine:

“A belief in working with the head, hand and heart and mixing enough play with the work so that every task is pleasurable and makes for health and happiness.”

This creative society that Hubbard founded based its beliefs on the rejection of mass-produced goods, and instead focusing time and energy on making hand crafted pieces. From 1895 to its demise in 1938 The Roycroft artists made all sorts of goods- books, furniture, metal work, and lamps. Light fixtures such as this one can be traced back to The Roycrofters. The simple design, hammered finish, and delicate copper rivets are all hallmarks of the arts and crafts movement.

We find that early antique lighting was designed as objects of art and we treat each fixture with careful attention to preserve original beauty. Our fixtures are cleaned, rewired & are ready to hang, following UL standards. We can work with you on code requirements.
