This incredible hand painted ceramic anatomical heart is set on a metal rod connected to a simple black painted wood base. A makers sticker is hard to make out but the heart was produced by Ward’s Science out of Rochester, New York. Some small chips are present.

This model along with other strange biological finds are from the Biology department of St. Catherine’s University in St. Paul, Minnesota.

Human anatomy was the most prominent of the biological sciences of the 19th and early 20th centuries. The discipline also progressed to establish growing sources of knowledge in histology and developmental biology. As a supplement to intricately drawn diagrams in books, plastic models were cast to replace the need for bodies. Use these models for teaching in a classroom or at home, or use these as a conversation starter in a room with oddities of the 20th century.
