Founded by Bernhard Blitzer in 1904 as New York Gas and Appliances Co., the company changed its name to Lightolier, a contraction of light and chandelier, as electric lighting became more widely accepted. Initially, they specialized in decorative chandeliers, but shifted their focus to high-end designs in the 1920s. Then Lightolier led the move to mid-century modern lighting, from the late 1950’s 60’s & early 1970’s they were building lights by designers who’s names are commonplace in mid-century design. They have figured heavily in the use of down-lighting in residential, hospitality, and entertainment spaces.
