Joseph Bradford Sargent and his two brothers began their careers in the hardware industry in 1810, when they opened a wholesale hardware business in New York City. It wasn't until 1864 that they moved their factory from New Britain, Connecticut to New Haven and incorporated as Sargent & Co. By 1914, their catalog listed 60,000 different items, making it one of the largest hardware manufacturing plants in the United States. During World War II, the company produced items for the war effort, during which time their employee demographic increased from 10% to 40% women! In the post-war era, they concentrated more on high quality locks and door-related mechanisms. Sargent was acquired by the Swedish conglomerate ASSA ABLOY in 1996.
