Wooden cabinet with painted hand-carved crucifix inside. Religious iconography such as this was an important part of Catholic believers in the 19th century, in addition to the conversion of Native Americans. Nichos (Spanish for “niche”) are decorative boxes to display religious icons. While these may seem like some remnant of antiquity, nichos have become symbols of ethnic identity and heritage. In the postmodern era, nichos have become a type of art and part of popular culture in Arizona and the urbanized American Southwest, where some nichos are even made of discarded consumer goods. This nicho features what is called a bulto, a three dimensional, hand carved religious figure. A sun symbol, stylized by artistic influence from Southwestern Native American culture, is at the top of the cabinet.
