Lightolier sconces with deco iridescent etched slip shades.
Founded by Bernhard Blitzer in 1904 as New York Gas and Appliances Co., the company changed its name to Lightolier, a contraction of light and chandelier, as electric lighting became more widely accepted. Initially, they specialized in decorative chandeliers, but shifted their focus to high-end designs in the 1920s. Lightolier has continued to be on the cutting edge of lighting design, having been the first company to introduce the track lighting system in the 1960s and the digital lighting system in the early 1990s. They have figured heavily in the use of downlighting in residential, hospitality, and entertainment spaces.
