We’ve attributed this work to the John Jelliff Co. because of the neo-Grec style and prominence of the caryatid center to the piece. John Jelliff & Company was in business between 1836 and 1890, headed by John Jelliff, one of the most prominent cabinet makers and furniture designers of the latter part of the century. His company produced mostly parlor furniture pieces, with his personal largest and most memorable work being a 20 foot tall black walnut chair at St. Patrick's Cathedral in New York City. As for this piece, the large cameo of a goddess or muse at top center demonstrates the styles nod to Renaissance Revival architecture, which is why we’ve attributed it to the neo-Grec. Simplistic wave brackets also hint at Classicism. The organic low relief carvings highlighted in gold sit well in the burled walnut surface. The silver mirrors are worn with age behind the glass. Repairs have been made throughout its long life, the marble has cracked, and parts have been glued back on. Please check in with the store for details.
