The acanthus is one of the most common plant forms to make foliage ornament and decoration. In Ancient Greek architecture, acanthus ornament appears extensively in the capitals of the Corinthian and Composite orders. The corbels carrying balconies in Italy and France were large and richly carved. Taking a cue from the 16th century, the designers of the 19th century Beaux-Arts architecture used classical detailing in their corbel designs. You can add detail to kitchen islands, mantels, or wood cabinetry, or create elegant shelves with corbels. If you just wanted to add a classical, elegant atmosphere to the room, these corbels would do the job.
