This very unique x-framed folding chair combines heavily carved wood, with the storage capacity of a folding chair. This simpler frame type is known as a dante or dantesca chair, developed during the 16th century in Italy. Dante chairs typically have arms that end in scrolls, and continue all the way up to the back support. It commonly features a fabric seat and back support, and a boss (an intricately carved knob) where the legs intersect. The chair folds up vertically, folding the leather down the center of the seat. The intricately carved wood includes a lion’s head at the intersection of the legs, claw feet, and green face men, a representation of a face surrounded by or made from leaves, on the upper portion of the chair arms. These motifs were typically found in Romanesque and medieval style buildings. Use this majestic piece of the Italian Renaissance to impress or entertain, then easily fold up and store when not needed.
