This massive oak fireplace mantel is speculated to have come from the Black Forest regions of southern Germany and features absolutely stunning craftsmanship. From Germany it was shipped to St. Louis, MO to the mansion of lumber merchant Joseph G. Chapman. His house was built in 1868, and torn down some time before 1906. It was then stored in a barn until 1944, when his daughter Isobel had to do something with it once the barn was set to be demolished. It was given to Ferdinand Maguolo, a cabinet maker who had worked with Isobel’s husband. Because of the size of the mantle, it was put into storage once again until 1947, when Ferdinand died and his son George inherited it. George was the architect for several buildings at Nazareth College, which is where the mantle has been for the last 72 years.
